PODCAST: D&D Racer Willie McCoy Wins

Willie McCoy, shocked 15,000 fans Sunday by winning the Labor Day Weekend Springfield Mile. It not only marked the first Springfield Mile win for the 41-year-old Texan, it was amazingly his first national win ever. McCoy’s stunning victory was 23 years in the making. That’s how long he’s been on the pro circuit.

“It’s unbelievable,” McCoy said. “On the cool-down lap I started crying a little bit because I was happy. It doesn’t; even seem real. It hasn’t sunk in yet, but it will hit me sometime soon. We’re going to celebrate and have fun tonight.”

There was hardly a dry eye in the house when an emotional McCoy took center stage on the podium after the 25-Mile National. Even Chris Carr and Jake Johnson, who joined McCoy on the podium in second and third respectively, said they were happy to see McCoy take the victory.

Shayna Texter’s win marks the first time a female has won a main event in the 50+ year existence of the sport. Shayna has been on a mission recently with a podium finish in Sacramento and a very close 4th place finish at the Springfield Mile.

“I have just been digging deep and getting hungrier every time I get close to a win,” Shayna says. “I have been dreaming about this for a long time and to make it happen at a place where my grandfather has a place in the Knoxville Sprint Car Hall of Fame makes it even better.”
